Image access does not work the way it does in our other logs.
The JPG Link will open the first image for the month, but you cannot edit the link to get another page.
You will probably find it easier to use the NARA URL to view pages or open them from the Tracker.

Generally, weather data is not recorded when they are in port.
However, barometer readings are sometimes entered with the events.
This is valuable data, so please transcribe it.


Based on pressures like 77.20 and this converter, they seem to be
using centimeters of mercury rather than inches of mercury

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

La Carraca Navy Yard, Spain

At 10 called all hands to muster, read the Emancipation Proclamation of the President (Order No. 4) dated Jan'y 1^st, 1863.

USS Chippewa came into Cadiz Harbor. There's no mention of her in the NARA archive list of scanned logbooks, cut they do have logbooks from her.

Noon to 4 PM

Condemned and threw overboard 71/2 Raisins.

I'm glad they save the good half of that one raisin! Waste not, want not.

PS. Only the second time in quite a while I got both a Latitude AND a Longitude. It's good to have the exact position of those discarded raisins.

I think the log-keeper left out barrels or tubs or whatever raisins came in. Just like he leaves out lots of other stuff, like Longitudes, courses, speeds, weather, ..., ..., ...

I just rather enjoyed the vision of the captain and doctor inspecting each raisin, before deciding which one to keep, and which one to throw overboard.

Off Angra Harbor, Azores

We keep chasing ships spotted. We rarely catch them, but we did catch the British Steamer Juno. She was in Horta Harbor, but we can do nothing when they're in a foreign port. We tried to catch her when she left, but she made it into Angra Harbor before we caught her. We did, however, catch her after she left Angra.

I looked up British Steamer Juno, 1863, and there was an article in the New York Times, but I'm too cheap to read it. In any case, it was about the USS Connecticut catching her off Wilmington, NC, in September.

As you can see, it's another page with a "voyage" and few if any navigation details.

This should work although there really isn't much there.

Note: Discovered sixteen strangers on board. Upon investigation it was ascertained that they were refugees from Queenstown
who had concealed themselves on board previous to the departure from that port.

At 1:00 sent the Launch on shore with the strange men. At 2, the Launch returned bringing the men back, who represent themselves as destitute, and desirous of employment and protection.

Evidentially they figured Michael would take pity on them

James Magu's term of enlistment expires this day, and the Captain deems it necessary to retain him, consequently he is entitled to one fourth more pay.

I don't remember seeing a note about increased pay when you're kept on after your term of enlistment expires. Do you think we can expect the same? How long are our terms of enlistment in effect?
