Greetings!
We are happy to announce the release of AtmosEleC – Atmospheric Electricity for Climate. This new Zooniverse project explores the science linking atmospheric electricity and climate change.
The AtmosEleC research team needs your help transcribing historical data from Lerwick Observatory in Shetland, UK. The atmospheric electricity measurements at Lerwick began in 1925, and were continued systematically by diligent observatory staff until 1984. Almost all of the Lerwick hourly measurements during this interval have now been recovered, including many original handwritten records. Such long datasets are now recognised as precious resources for modern atmospheric science.
Atmospheric electricity measurements are closely linked to global lightning activity and can be used to study the electric charge separated by thunderstorms. Within the recorded data, significant past weather and climate changes are captured, including the warming and cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean associated with El Niño events. Intriguingly, these measurements also contain information about environmental radioactivity, especially the nuclear bomb tests of the 1950s.
By digitising these records, you will help create a searchable dataset that scientists and researchers worldwide will then use to advance atmospheric research!

I wonder when Zooniverse will recognize the ease of entering data using a modified SS like we use.
I was thinking of having a go at this one but their interface is so clunky I did not even bother going past the tutorial.

From the team: "The Erect-crested penguin is the least known of all penguin species. It only breeds on two island groups - the Bounty and Antipodes Islands - in New Zealand's sub-antarcic region. To date, we have very little reliable information about the species' population size. All estimates that have been published - and form the basis of the current 'endangered' IUCN rating - are difficult to verify. Since 2022, the Tawaki Project is using drone imagery to survey the world population of Erect-crested penguins. We invite you to help us count penguins in high-resolution drone imagery".

Yo-ho-ho! We are excited to announce the launch of The Living Sailor!
Living Sailors, also called by-the-wind sailors (or Velella velella), travel the world's oceans. These beautiful and strange jellies float at the surface and harness the wind with a fleshy sail that points either left or right. Over 60 years ago, a Soviet scientist hypothesized that left- and right-facing sails travel across different parts of the ocean. Was he right?
This new project asks volunteers to count and identify The Living Sailors from thousands of images gathered by iNaturalist observers from around the globe. Volunteers will count Living Sailors, determine whether they are lefty or righty, and whether they are alive or dead. The data from this project will help us determine (1) where and (2) how many lefty and righty Living Sailors are around the ocean. With more than 10,000 images from more than 7,000 iNaturalist observers, we can possibly answer this half-century-old question: does sail direction guide Living Sailors to different parts of the global ocean? Knowing that answer, we can better understand this overlooked community of strange and wonderful wanderers.

What the researchers say: "Our brains have tens of billions of neurons connected with each other. Most of these connections were made during the first few years of our lives. By studying this developing era, we can learn a lot about how we behave and think, as well as how neurodevelopment disorders like autism and epilepsy happen. In this project, we are exploring the hippocampus, the hub for memory and learning in the brain. We already understand quite a bit about the hippocampus. However, there are still a ton of details to uncover! They lie in sub-cellular structures such as the synapse, which is the junction between two neurons. As synapses are small and numerous, it's been difficult studying the organelles within them, which is why we need your help! We will be searching in the synaptic boutons (the small swellings at the end of a neuron that makes contact with another neuron) for the mitochondria and synaptic vesicles together. The distribution and shapes of these organelles will help us understand a little better how the neuronal connections are functioning in the brain"

What the researchers say: "Researchers from the University of Newcastle have teamed up with SAPHI engineering, and several government and private environmental agencies to develop the Biosensor Monitoring project (BIOMON). The BIOMON team are developing an AI powered biodiversity monitoring device. These devices will be set out in areas of ecological concern to monitor a range of species, including birds, mammals and amphibians. In Bird Find you will be presented with snippets of bird calls that were recorded and identified by the BIOMON device. You'll be tasked with either verifying or correcting the identifications made by the BIOMON device."
