US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion

Post by Matteo »

This topic is for the United States excluding Alaska.
We have a very large number of Alaskan place names, so we have created topics specifically for the state of Alaska: Alaskan Place Names -- Reference and Alaskan Place Names -- Discussion

In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a US (non-Alaskan) place name or locating the place.

Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:
  • Name in log
  • Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - two decimal places is the preferred format)
  • State
  • Current name (if different)
  • Link to more information
  • Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful
Don't worry if you can't supply all the information. Your link to the page will enable others to search for the missing information.
(You can save us even more work by using the template provided, but that is strictly optional.)

Any kind of geographical information in this topic is always welcome. A Google Map covering a specific ship or area is a good example of a much appreciated contribution. We will collect them in the corresponding Reference topic.

Puget Sound was named, by British Captain George VANCOUVER, for the British Lieutenant Peter John PUGET who surveyed it.

Thank you. I've been living on Puget Sound for 28 years, but had no idea how it got its name. The article mentions my favorite museum in Seattle, the Museum of History and Industry.

We already have Anacapa Island in the Reference topic, but today's National Archives image caught my eye ;)

Dismissed from his job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coast Survey on January 9, 1855, after only two months, influential 19th-century artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler completed this etching "Sketch of Anacapa Island" during his brief federal service.

The logkeeper notes Point Arena as: 'Point Oreana' The handwriting is not great so it also looks like 'Point Dreana'
